On November 27, 2024, UnILiON gathered experts, policymakers, and academics at the Fondation Universitaire in Brussels to explore the transformative opportunities Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers to society, research, and education. The event, themed “Exploring the Future Opportunities of AI,” highlighted the critical role universities play in driving innovation and ensuring ethical development in this rapidly evolving field.
The day opened with a deep dive into the societal and technological impacts of AI. Discussions focused on how AI is reshaping sectors like healthcare, education, and governance, offering immense potential but also raising challenges around equity, bias, and regulation. Speakers underscored the need for responsible use, robust ethical frameworks, and interdisciplinary collaboration to guide AI’s development.
In a high-level dialogue, participants examined the European Research Area’s (ERA) agenda and its vision for a more connected and innovative research ecosystem. Universities were identified as central players in advancing Europe’s green and digital transitions, with policies increasingly aiming to empower them to take on this role effectively.
The final session focused on the intersection of AI, education, and policy. It explored how universities can adapt to a world where AI transforms teaching, learning, and operational structures. Participants emphasized the importance of AI literacy, responsible integration, and collaboration with industries to foster innovation and ensure societal benefits.
Throughout the event, key themes emerged: the urgency of balancing technological advancement with ethical responsibility, the value of transdisciplinary approaches, and the need for stronger public-private partnerships. UnILiON reaffirmed its commitment to positioning European universities as leaders in shaping AI innovation that aligns with societal values, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
